Building A Transparent Institution : Using TILT Tools In Instruction and Student Services- One document at a time

The Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework is a researched based project that aims to close equity gaps for all students, especially for systematically under-served student populations. A recent study on TILT indicates that small changes in assignments could increase students' retention rate between 13-15%. In addition, the impact not only happened in the first year but continue to the 2nd year (A Teaching Intervention that Increases Underserved College Students’ Success). Washington state is one of the participating states in the nation in the TILT in Higher Ed project. Our college district is also one of the participating institutions. However, most participating institutions in the nation focus on the instructional aspect--that is, encouraging faculty members to implement the TILT framework in making their assignments more transparent for students. Not many institutions have extended the TILT framework to include student services and staff members to TILT their documents to students as an institutional-wide effort.

Project Purpose:

Provide TILT trainings and resources throughout Seattle Colleges to both faculty and staff to increase the transparency in documents that students will use.

Project Goals:

Provide TILT workshops to staff and faculty
Provide a Canvas site to share TILT training materials and resources
Collect and share TILTed work /documents from staff and faculty in the district so different programs can adapt and revise those materials for their own use.

Provide hands-on learning opportunities to sharpen skills and stay current with 21^st century learning and institutional effectiveness.
Interact and learn from facilitators and peers to make student-facing documents/assignments more transparent and easily accessible to students
Build faculty and staff learning communities to sustain the TILT efforts.
